The Setup

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

The Setup:
“Gruber mentioned today that he contributed to The Setup on waferbaby. Cool idea—I love seeing how experts in the field do what they do…”
(Via The Weekly Review.)

So do I.

Since I have heard about Mr. Gruber from multiple sources, including Merlin Mann of 43folders.com fame, I decided to go check “The Setup” out.
Oh dear.
I found toys!

Caffiene keeps the display from going to sleep. Yay! I had been using a custom power profile and shoving the mouse all the way up in the top right hand corner to keep the screensaver from kicking in while watching Netflix “Watch Instantly”.

And because I was looking into mac software again, I decided to see if GnuPG for Apple Mail was updated yet… low and behold, it is!

Which lead to my next must have feature in a mail client, the ability to have multiple “identities” or at least From: addresses. A little more searching on the net and voila! Just have to add email addresses separated with a comma to the Accounts -> Email address field.
I can’t believe it is that simple.
Now if only this setup will be stable, I guess only time will tell.

Gamers and Violence

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

I ran across this article, where a researcher has stepped up to say that there isn’t a link between violent video games and school shootings.
Duh.
You might as well try and say that Music is resp… oh wait, they tried that too.. ummm. Well, it must have been the movies… crap, they tried that too… I know TV… wait.. nevermind…

Why is it so hard for people to accept responsibility for their own actions? “The devil made me do it” hasn’t been a valid defense for a long, long time, but people seem to always be looking for something else to use as the new devil.

How to Suck at Information Security, from SANS.org

How to Suck at Information Security
Some of my favorites are:

  • Require your users to change passwords too frequently.
  • Expect your users to remember passwords without writing them down.
  • Don’t cross-train the IT and security staff.
  • Expect end-users to forgo convenience in place of security.
  • Lock down the infrastructure so tightly, that getting work done becomes very difficult.
  • Assume that policies don’t apply to executives.

I have seen all of these from time to time, and they have all made me go slightly bonkers. Not always at the time that I saw them, because, well, we were all young and dumb at least once. :)

A fellow SysAdmin, jss, decided to grace me with this link via IRC as I was about to log off and go pass out for a few hours…

I never expected to hear quite that mix of music in one piece.
I do believe I am going to need to look up some more of this groups work.

Irony, much?

Friday, January 16th, 2009

In this article on foxnews.com, at the end there is the following quote:

Boettger, who was shocked that the files had been made public, asked FOXNews.com to delete them. Though he said he didn’t know who could have made the mistake, he said he was on the case. “We’re gonna try to find out who released that and who it was released to and how we could retrieve it,” he said.

While at the top of the article is a picture of the scanned document. So Fox News, in writing an article about how everyone is shocked and dismayed that this mans private records were published, publishes them.

Netscape Enterprise Server released under BSD License

Netscape Enterprise Server, Now Open Source.

Holy Crap! My first ISP job we had Netscape Enterprise Server running on an SGI Indy running IRIX. It was “the webserver”. Course it was also “the mail server, the radius server, the dns server”. I’m not sure if I want to try to relive that particular part of my life again…

But it would be interesting to see how much I can remember about how that software worked… Nah, I’m not that masochistic.

Tanker truck fall down, go Boom?

This morning traffic was being a pain, and as I got off of 12/18 onto 14 East to go home, I saw that there seemed to be some kind of issue on the other side of the exit… and then I heard on the radio that there was a full fuel tanker truck that had “fallen”. Yikes! I guess I will find out later if they managed to right the truck safely if that exit is still there.

Thanks is such a simple thing.

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Saying “Thanks” is such a simple thing. Yet it can go so far. Our mailman just dropped off the mail, since it wouldn’t fit in the mailbox, and he thanked me for keeping the snow away from the mailbox, making his job easier. I think he just made my day.

Jesse will remember!

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Looks like there may be hope for Jesse after all! A study has shown that coffee can help reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s. Too bad all he will remember are the hallucinations from drinking 3 pots of coffee a day!

Yes, I am picking on him.

A new beginning.

Friday, January 16th, 2009

And now, I start over. Blame Jesse. My goal is going to be to post at least once every couple of days, as to what is going to be posted, I don’t know. The subjects could cover a broad spectrum of topics that only hold in common the fragments of my psyche. Politics, Games, Systems Administration, Perl, PHP, whatever.

I’ll try to make the tags/categories make some kind of sense, but no promises.
